Choosing The Proper Ring Size
It's easy to assume that the size of your finger is the same as the size of your ring finger. But it's not always the case! If you're buying a ring for yourself or for someone else, it's important to know what size you need. We'll walk you through how to measure your ring size, and offer some tips for getting the right fit.
Determine your ring size.
The best way to determine your ring size is to go to a jewelry store and have a professional measure your finger. If you can't go to a jewelry store, try this trick: Wrap a piece of string or a strip of paper around the base of your finger. Mark the point where the string or paper meets and measure that length with a ruler. If you don't have a ruler handy, you can also use an old-fashioned ruler. Just place it on the table and wrap the string or paper around it until it meets. The number on the ruler will indicate your ring size.
Use the right tools.
To get the best fit, you should measure the circumference of your finger at the widest point. That is usually right below the knuckle. Measure it in centimeters and then use a chart to convert your measurement to US ring sizes. For example, if you measure at 24.2 centimeters, you would need a size 8.
Try on rings in the store, if possible.
You may be able to find a ring that is the right size in the store, but you can also order one online. If you buy a ring online, make sure to measure your finger first and then use the ring size chart to find the size. You should also measure your finger after wearing it for a day or two, as your fingers may change size throughout the day.
Consider your lifestyle.
If you're active, you may need a wider band to accommodate for swelling in your fingers. If you're always on the go, you may want to go with a ring that's less likely to get in the way. If you work with your hands, then you'll want something that is durable and won't irritate your skin. If you're in the medical profession, you'll want something that won't catch on things. If you wear gloves, then it's best to choose rings that are thicker so they don't get caught when you put your gloves on or take them off.
Don’t forget about your partner’s fingers.
Rings are meant to be worn on fingers, so don’t forget about your partner’s fingers. If you are buying a ring for someone else, remember that the circumference of the finger will change depending on whether or not they are wearing their engagement ring or other rings. You can also try to find out what size the person’s fingers are by looking at their hands. This is not always accurate because people can wear rings on different fingers, but it is worth a try.
